Marking the start of the 2014/15 East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League was the race at Whitbread Hollow, Eastbourne, kindly staged by Eastbourne Rovers A.C on Sunday 2nd November. Eager to set the bar high again was a healthy turnout by Heathfield Road Runners, who join forces with Uckfield Runners to make a combined team in the league.
A total of 18 runners from Heathfield raced in the event accompanied by a further 13 from Uckfield out of the field of 244; the team delivering a very respectable fourth position out of the 10 teams that entered on the day. League dominators Lewes once again took first place, followed in second place by Hailsham Runners.
The three lap course is atop the chalk downland of the South Downs National Park, providing one of the ‘least muddy’ routes in the season and thankfully the heaviest of the rain held off until most of the field had returned.
First in for Heathfield was James Cox, followed closely behind by Ian Bromley and Mick Stiller. Other male finishers included Roy Cooper, Rowan Baker, Cedric Clemerson, Kim Foo, David Woollard, Ivan Horsfall-Turner, Andrew Titmuss, Tony Lavazza, Andrew Saunders and Andy Osborne.
For the ladies first in for Heathfield was Anne Bromley followed by Melissa Wright, Paulette Smith, Sharon Saunders and Diane Hammond.
The next race in the league will be on Sunday 14th December at Newplace Farm, Framfield, which is hosted by Uckfield Runners. For more detail visit www.eastsussexcrosscountry.co.uk/events
